The best thing about being a kid is that you’re an infinite vessel of innocence. You get to enjoy many movies without thinking too much about them. Eventually, there will come a time when you decide to rewatch some of your childhood favourites.

Sadly, since you’re older and, therefore, know better, these movies may not have been good as you remembered them to be. Whether it could be the message we get from princess movies or the weird elements in Back To The Future, let’s have a look at some movies that didn’t age well.

Back To The Future Didn’t Even Travel To The Future

To this day, I still have an issue with why they called it Back To The Future even though they were going to the past. Anyway, annoyance aside, there was one element we just found completely weird in this movie, and, no, it’s not that his best friend is this weird old guy.

Netflix

So, the film revolves around Marty McFly going back in time to try and get his parents back together. At the same time, his mom hits on him! What’s worse is, we get a scene where George spies on Lorraine. Let’s just say we’re not big fans of a peeping Tom and weird fantasies.

Snow White and The Seven Dwarves Isn’t Big Into Consent

Snow White And The Seven Dwarves is the first movie that put Disney princesses on the list. Since the movie came out in 1937, you can expect that it wasn’t as progressive as some of the movies now.

disney.fandom.com

You see, in light of the #MeToo movement, the movie really has an issue with consent. Prince Charming walks up to Snow White’s sleeping body and just kisses her without her knowledge. Although the kiss does wake her up, still.

Maybe Casper Isn’t As Friendly As We Thought

The beloved 1995 film Casper is a classic film fit for all ages. It’s about a young and friendly ghost who befriends this young girl that moved into their old mansion. This movie may be family-friendly, but there are some questionable things.

AllEars.net

The one thing we found really creepy about this was when Casper finds Kat asleep in bed and he whispers, “There’s a girl in my bed. Yes!” It’s kind of creepy considering that this friendly ghost is only 12 years old.

Beauty And The Beast Sends The Wrong Message

Belle is one of the most beloved Disney princesses of all time. Who could not? She’s smart, cares for her father, and is selfless. That’s why when we rewatch this movie now, we’re not so happy with the message it sends

www.komar.de

Yes, the Beast did start off being mean and grumpy, but you do have to admit that in the end, he did slowly let his guard down and started respecting Belle’s boundaries. Nonetheless, it’s safe to say Belle fell in love with him because she developed Stockholm Syndrome.

Home Alone Is Just Wrong

Home Alone is undoubtedly one of the most memorable Christmas movies from our childhood. However, looking back on it now through the eyes of an adult, we can’t help but question a few aspects of the movie.

goodhousekeeping.com

First off, what kind of parent would forget their child? Marketing a movie where the parent seems to forget their child a lot is just off. Second, where did Kevin learn all that violence? He could’ve just called the cops and call it a day. There was no need for him to go that hard.

Sleeping Beauty, Yet Another Movie About Consent

Disney really needs to reconsider how they teach young kids about love and consent. There’s no denying that it is a great movie and that we all want to be princesses. However, there’s just one thing wrong.

Pinterest

The biggest question is: In what way did Disney think it was okay for a prince to run up to a tower and kiss a 16-year-old he had never met nor seen in his entire life? What’s more, when Aurora wakes up, she instantly falls in love with the prince. Yikes!

Space Jam Did Lola Bunny Dirty

This beloved Looney Tunes film featuring Michael Jordan was one of the greatest films to be released in the ’90s, but it really didn’t age well, particularly because of how the male characters treated Lola Bunny.

Time Magazine

First off, they kept calling her, “doll” which is creepy in many ways. Second, the way her character was designed made it seem like she was headed to an adult cosplay convention and not a basketball game. Well, at least the new 2021 film fixed that issue.

She’s All That Is Not A Trope I Like

She’s All That was a pretty funny film when it came out in 1999. The film was based on a bet that the popular and handsome jock could turn the geeky and unpopular girl popular. Several movies have featured this trope in one way or another through the years.

imdb.com

If you really think about it, though, it’s a bad trope that sends the wrong message to young and vulnerable girls. This movie, and other similar ones, are basically saying that to get the guy, girls should be willing to change how they look for him. It’s 2021, we don’t do that anymore.

Big Daddy Was A Stereotype Fest

Adam Sandler was on the big screen a lot in the ’90s, including the famous 1999 film Big Daddy. A lot of kids enjoyed the movie since Sandler seemed like the ultimate dad who gave his kid the freedom to pretty much do whatever he wanted.

imdb.com

As adults, and maybe even parents, looking back at it now, the film isn’t actually that favourable, what with all the male stereotypes. From checking out waitresses at Hooters to peeing in public, we wonder how this became a kids’ movie in the first place.

The Swan Princess Is Yet Another Questionable Film

Believe it or not, one of the most liked princesses is not a Disney Princess; it’s Princess Odette from The Swan Princess. Unfortunately, the movie didn’t age well, mostly because it showed that men only wanted to marry her for her looks.

theswanprincess.fandom.com

Take, for example, Prince Derek. Throughout Princess Odette’s childhood, Prince Derek ignored her. Then, when they’re finally grown up, he starts pursuing her simply because she’s all beautiful now. And, please, don’t remind us about Rothbart.

Sleepover Missed The Mark

There are reasons why the early 2000s film Sleepover only has 15% on Rotten Tomatoes. First, the entire movie is cringe. Second, the dialogue is just horrendous and sends the wrong message to young viewers.

rogererbert.com

Third, there’s one scene where a group of weird guys break into this house just to rummage through a girl’s drawers? Fourth, the film failed terribly with the whole body positivity thing by using one character as nothing but the butt of the joke.

Shallow Hal Was Indeed Shallow

Shallow Hal was a 2001 film about a guy who only looked at a woman’s outer beauty and failed to notice what was inside. The movie does say Hal is shallow, but picking apart a woman’s every single flaw was still done in bad taste.

imdb.com

While the movie did try to redeem Hal, and we’re sure they meant well, it’s still not a movie we should have been watching as kids or teens back in the early 2000s. They even asked Gwyneth Paltrow to wear a fat suit. Oops!

Cinderella And Love At First Sight

When it comes to Disney princesses, Cinderella is a movie that kids have seen at least once. Sadly, when you watch it as an adult, it doesn’t hit the same way anymore. This is probably why it’s better to enjoy things when you’re more innocent and less self-aware.

disney.fandom.com

The whole movie is pretty much trying to say you need a man and a fairy godmother to get out of that horrible life you’re living in. Cinderella, honey, you don’t need a man to save yourself! That’s what Disney should have been telling young girls.

She Never Should Have Been Kissed

Okay, yes, we know that Josie was technically an adult when she went undercover in high school, but nobody knew that, especially her teacher, Sam! He knew that she was his student, and yet he still developed a crush on her.

tunefind.com

The whole film not only romanticized student-teacher romantic relationships but also threw in a lot of high school stereotypes with the popular and non-popular crowd. Also, how did she manage to pull off looking like a high-schooler when she was in her mid-20s? Did nobody really notice that?

Charlie And The Chocolate Factory Is Just Questionable

Yes, this was a chocolate-filled movie and Charlie Bucket is just lovable. We don’t have any problem with him, don’t worry. We do have an issue with his grandparents, though. Brace yourself, it’s time for a short rant.

play.google.com

First off, we don’t like the Grandpa George erasure. Seriously, he doesn’t have any lines! Second, the grandparents were completely bedridden, but when it was time to go to the factory, Grandpa Joe could miraculously walk? All this time he could walk?!

Superbad’s Humour Was Just…

There’s no denying that everybody was quoting Superbad when it first came out in 2007. For some time, McLovin was the most famous character. However, looking back at that movie now, it just didn’t really age well.

Rolling Stone

The male characters didn’t exactly talk about the female characters respectfully if you know what we mean. Then, the police officers want a “fun night” with an underage kid? It just doesn’t hit it anymore these days.

Homeward Bound’s Voice Acting Was Odd

If you’ve seen Homeward Bound, then you probably have fond memories of the movie. After all, it’s a cute animal-friendly movie with three lovable animals. What’s not to love about it? While we do love the movie, there’s something we’re a bit bothered with.

imdb.com

Something is distracting about the voice acting in it. Yes, the voice actors did a good job, but what’s wrong is that the animals’ mouths don’t even move. It looks as though the animals are just staring into space while the voice actors are narrating their inner thoughts.

Meredith In The Parent Trap Was A Mood

The Parent Trap is one of the most iconic movies from our childhood. As a kid, we were all basically rooting for Lindsay Lohan’s twin characters to get rid of their evil future stepmom, Meredith Blake, so their parents could get back together again.

vox.com

Well, rewatching the movie as an adult, we now see many people reconsidering their initial standpoint. Technically, all Meredith was trying to do was marry a loaded guy who had a beautiful house. Isn’t that the dream thought? A total mood right there, to be honest.

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer Isn’t That Friendly

Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer maybe a Christmas movie, but that doesn’t mean it sends a good message. In fact, it doesn’t teach us anything about acceptance! Rudolph’s dad asks him to hide his red nose, and when his classmates found out, they make fun of him for it.

Smithsonian Magazine

Don’t worry, though, kids. If there’s one important message that the movie sends, it’s this: People will hate you for being different, but once they start needing your help, they will want to be your best friend. Great, right?

The Little Mermaid Gave Up Her Voice For A Man

Ariel has gained a reputation as one of the most favourite Disney princesses due to naïvety and curiosity. However, people may really want to reconsider their options as she’s not really the best role model. But then again, most of the Disney princesses make really questionable choices.

YouTube

In the movie, Ariel falls in love with this Prince that she absolutely has 0 information on. In hopes of getting to see him, she gives up her voice in exchange for legs. In the original story, she did get legs but every time she took a step, she would be in extreme pain. Luckily, the movie toned it down and made it more kid-friendly. Sadly, it still sends a message that getting someone to love you means sacrificing a part of who you are.
