Between 2013 and 2015, a cybercriminal group named Carbanak Cyber gang hacked more than 100 ATMs in more than 100 financial institutions worldwide. Carbanak’s activities were first discovered in Kyiv back in winter 2013.

The criminals reprogrammed ATMs to dispense money without having to interact with the machine locally. Then, money mules would take the money and transfer it to the hackers’ accounts. In total, they were said to have stolen more than $900 million.
