Coconut water is a naturally sweet liquid that is extracted from the inside of green coconuts. It is known as nature’s sports beverage. It is a quick source of sugar, electrolytes, and hydration. Coconut meat mostly consists of fat, but coconut water is rich in carbs. Sometimes many companies add different ingredients like sugar, artificial flavor and fruit juices in coconut water. For this reason, people with diabetes may wonder whether it is safe to consume coconut water or not. Some diabetes patients are concerned that this natural drink may affect their blood sugar levels.

People who are looking to reduce their sugar intake or patients of diabetes can consume coconut water at a limited amount. It is better than any other sugary soda drink. Coconut water is a good source of potassium and manganese. It is also an excellent source of vitamins. So if you want to decrease your sugar intake, you can easily choose unsweetened coconut water over other sugary beverages like soda.

As coconut water contains natural sugar, it has a sweet taste. This sugar content mainly depends on the amount of sugar added by the manufacturer. Sweetened coconut water contains a double amount of sugar than unsweetened coconut water. An 8-ounce of Pepsi can contain more sugar than the same amount of coconut water. Therefore, unsweetened coconut water is a much better choice than many other sweetened beverages.

Though more research is needed, some studies based on an animal show that mature coconut water can be able to lower blood sugar and hemoglobin level.
