19. George Mallory’s Lost Camera
George Mallory, a British explorer and mountaineer, disappeared, along with fellow adventurer Andrew Irvine, on June 8, 1924, while attempting to summit Mount Everest. Mallory was carrying a camera with him. A storm swept in as the pair was nearing the top of the peak, and it is unknown if they actually reached the top before they died. In 1999, Mallory’s body was discovered on the mountain but Irvine’s remains have not yet been discovered.
It is possible that Mallory’s missing camera could be found with Irvine’s body and it may show that the pair reached to top of Everest some thirty years before Edmund Hillary and his expedition hit the summit in 1953.
